A film first shown as a one-off during the Afrika Eye Film Festival is returning to the Watershed for a week-long run.
Tomorrow (Friday, December 2), Bristol-based director Simon Bright will be taking part in a Q&A after Robert Mugabe... What Happened?, a documentary about the Shakespearian rise and fall of the Zimbabwean leader.
With violence already started in the build up to Zimbabwe’s next presidential elections, exiled filmmaker Bright, previews his sensational new film, filmed undercover.
Bright says: “The turbulent history of Zimbabwe is a fascinating political thriller but a tragic one. I wanted to capture the drama of Mugabe from his origins as a poor peasant to his brilliant successes, his role in changing Southern Africa. Then I wanted to go beyond his turning point to where Zimbabwe is today. While Mugabe promulgates the story that this is a black and white conflict, I show how whites did fight for black rule and how Mugabe’s attack on whites is a tactic to trash the black opposition.”
As Zimbabwe fearfully prepares for its March 2012 elections amid rumours of 87-year-old Mugabe’s ailing health from prostate cancer, and in the wake of the suspicious death of retired Zimbabwean army General Solomon Mujuru, the film will have its first theatrical run from 2 to 9 December.
