Mediabox, which is currently closed for applications, is a fund offering 13-19 year olds the opportunity to create their own media projects - enabling young people to gain new skills, express themselves and get their voices heard.
Mediabox is not presently open to any new applications, subject to a review of the program by the Department of Education. We will make an announcement on the website when we know if this fund is reopening.
Mediabox was established by The Department for Education and Skills in 2007. Mediabox is a grant scheme which funds organisations to facilitate the creation and distribution of youth-led media content, using print, television, film, radio, digital, or online media to communicate their ideas and views on issues that matter to them.

In general a Mediabox project should be led by consultations with young people and young people should be at the heart of the project right the way through, not just in terms of deciding which issues/stories* are covered, but also in terms of having input in how the project develops and in gaining some idea of the project management skills required to deliver it.
Hundreds of organisations across England have already benefited from the scheme, impacting the lives of thousands of young people from a diverse range of backgrounds. Some examples of these projects can be seen here: www.media-box.co.uk/gallery.

South West Screen co-ordinates projects in the South West region. Our main role is to offer impartial advice to those applying from the region to ensure they have as strong an application as possible. All assessments of South West organisations and all decisions on national funding are then made by First Light, the organisation based in Birmingham which co-ordinates the fund nationally.
Mediabox Applications
Mediabox is currently closed for the interim. Following the election of the coalition government the Mediabox programme now falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education (DfE), formerly the Department for Children, Schools and Families. DfE are currently reviewing the Mediabox programme.

people leaving the criminal justice system and those at risk of
offending.
Why?
Radio Drama about Female Genital Mutilation, 'Why?', Click here to listen. The project, run by Intergrate Bristol, involved a group of 14 young women from BME backgrounds making a drama documentary for radio, with hard hitting interviews from experts and campaigners woven into the programme. All the young women are between the ages of 14 and 16. Their aim is to inform and raise awareness so that young people can question and raise concerns about FGM in their community, and campaign for the effective protection of young girls.
Evil Twin Artworks in Wiltshire have just completed their Mini Mediabox funded i-phone app ‘The Stammurai’ with a group of young stammerers. To find out more about the project and to download the free app click here.
