Unions

Unions are a really helpful resource for workers, authorised to negotiate on behalf of members and recognised by employers. The biggest in the creative media industries is BECTU. Others include:

Benefits vary, but most include:

  • access to standard terms, conditions and rates negotiated with employers
  • advice at the end of a phone, on everything from contracts to rates of pay
  • legal support in the event of disputes, tribunals or payment problems
  • subsidised services and preferential rates on anything from public liability insurance to pension plans.

Guilds and Associations

These don't have the status of trade unions, but still offer services and support to members. These include:

Useful tips

Work experience and minimum wage guidelines

BECTU have created a quick guide to work experience, volunteering and the National Minimum Wage - click here to download it.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and HM Revenue and Customs have published guidelines for work experience in the television industry. These guidelines have been co-ordinated by Skillset at the request of the industry and in consultation with the main employers, trade associations and trade unions. They are intended to offer practical advice rather than definitive statements of law. Whilst developed for, and with, the TV industry these guidelines have resonance and equally may apply across all of the audio visual industries and the rest of the creative industries. The guidelines can be downloaded (English or Welsh) from Skillset’s website here.

The National Minimum Wage helpline number is 0845 6000 678. The helpline in Northern Ireland is 0845 6500 207. As well as receiving complaints about non-payment of the minimum wage, the helpline takes calls for advice and information.

Skillset's Guidelines for Employers offering Work Placement Schemes in the Creative Industries, produced in collaboration Creative & Cultural Skills and Arts Council England, aim to promote good practice and clarify the various entry routes. Download the guidelines here.
